Korean is spoken on the Korean peninsula as the only native language and abroad as a second or foreign language. According to 2013 World Population Data Sheet of the Population reference Bureau, recently, the population of South Korea is approximately 50 million and that of North Korea around 24 million. Some 8 million Koreans reside outside the Korean peninsula. The major countries with a substantial Korean population are China (3 million), the United States (3 million), and Japan (600,000). In terms of number of speakers, Korean is ranked as the twelfth most spoken language and one of the most-used languages on the Internet (Internet World Stats, 2013).

Koreans also used some different dialects to communicate inside their each regions for example Cheju Island, North/South Chollado, North/South Chung Chongdo, North/ South Kyongsangdo etc. Dialect boundaries normally correspond to provincial boundaries. Some dialects are not easily intelligible with others. Some scholars has discussed as to whether or not Korean is related to Japanese. Some suggest that both languages are possible distantly related to the Altaic group.

Potential of Economic Values through Korean Language

The learning of a foreign language is often thought of in terms of its potential economic benefit and value. Among Asian languages, Korean’s economic miracle during the 1980s generated unprecedented international interest in Korean business, language, and culture. More recently, South Korea has quickly repositioned itself to become a major player in the global economy through its electronics and communications industries, medical tourim, as well as popular culture and entertainment industries.

Korean language learning and translation has become more important through the World especially in ASEAN Community. Recently, there has been an important increase in the number of foreigners traveling to South Korea to learn Korean, especially among middle-aged and older women, thanks perhaps to the recent popularity of South Korea’s popular cultural industries among ASEAN, which has helped raise a greater awareness of and interest in Korean culture in ASEAN.
